Woody Joe 1/75 Scale Kofuku-ji Temple Five-Story Pagoda Wooden Model Assembly Kit
Kofuku-ji Temple was established in 710, the year after the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo, as the clan temple of the Fujiwara clan.
A large temple complex stood on the vast temple grounds, with Emperors Komyo and Gensho constructing the Hokuen-do Hall, Emperor Shomu the Tokon-do Hall, and Empress Komyo the Five-Story Pagoda and Saikon-do Hall.
Kofuku-ji Temple flourished alongside the rise of the Fujiwara clan. In 1180, Kofuku-ji Temple participated in Minamoto no Yoritomo's anti-Taira uprising and was burned down by the Taira clan, resulting in the loss of most of its buildings and pagodas. However, it was soon rebuilt, and in the Middle Ages, it held real power as the Yamato Shugoshoku (provincial governor of Yamato), commanding tens of thousands of warrior monks who controlled Yamato.
However, the temple was destroyed in two major fires.
The temple's fortunes declined, and it is well known that there was even talk of selling the five-story pagoda during the Meiji Restoration.
The five-story pagoda is the most well-known structure of Kofuku-ji Temple, and its reflection on Sarusawa Pond is a renowned symbol of the ancient capital of Nara.
The current pagoda is the sixth-generation pagoda, completed in 1426, following the traditional Japanese style.
At 50.1 meters, it is a representative relic of the Muromachi period and the second tallest pagoda in Japan.
