Magpie and Tiger Painting : Traditional Folk Painting: Hojakdo
According to the Dongguk Sesigi, a book documenting Joseon Dynasty customs, the custom of exchanging paintings to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits in the New Year was described. The most common motif was the magpie and tiger painting, or Hojakdo (鵲虎圖).
Tigers were considered sacred animals because of their majestic appearance, and magpies were considered auspicious birds that brought good news. Paintings of the two animals are said to ward off evil spirits and bring only good fortune.
