Product Introduction
[Teardrop-Shaped Canopy Ensures All-Around Visibility] The Spitfire was a masterpiece that saved Britain during World War II. The Mk.XVI (16) was a variant of the Mk.IX, which became the Royal Air Force's main fighter in the latter half of the war, and featured an American-made Packard Merlin 266 engine. Many of these aircraft featured an E-wing equipped with two 20mm cannons and two 12.7mm machine guns, as well as an enlarged rudder. A teardrop-shaped canopy was adopted mid-production, improving rearward visibility, and the rear fuselage shape was modified accordingly. Many aircraft also had an additional fuel tank at the rear in addition to the main fuel tank located in front of the cockpit. 1,054 Spitfires were mass-produced between September 1944 and July 1945, and they served in the European theater of war, serving alongside the Mk.IX as fighter-bombers. After the war, the Spitfire continued to fly with the Royal Air Force until the early 1950s, and was also used by the Belgian and Greek air forces.
